It is a Rural constituency with an approximate literacy rate of 54.92%. There are 14,46,478 voters of which 7,69,044 are male and 6,77,392 are female and 42 voters of the third gender.
Tarik Anwar of NCP (alliance: UPA) won in this seat defeating BJP. NCP polled 4,31,292 of the total of 9,77,830 votes polled. BJP won the seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
Katihar goes to the polls in the 2st phase of the 2019 General Elections to choose the 17th Lok Sabha on Thursday, April 18, 2019. The election results for the seat are scheduled for Thursday, May 23, 2019.
The voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was 67.60%.
